Monday – Thursday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. and Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.

Salary Range: 95

Salary: Steps 1 - 6, $4,383 - $5,594 per month.

Health & Welfare:

District contributes $9,563 (subject to change) toward annual premium for medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. Lifetime retirement benefits provided for eligible retirees. The District participates in the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) and State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS) retirement programs.

This is a categorically funded position. Annual renewal of this position is contingent
upon the College’s receipt of continued funding.

Basic Function/Overview:

This is a specially funded AANAPISI federal grant position subject to continued funding. The AANAPISI grant is designed to provide support to Asian American and Pacific Islander students to increase their success rates in college. The Educational Advisor, AANAPISI grant, works directly with students applying to and enrolled in the AANAPISI grant program. As such, the educational advisor advises students in the preparation of their academic programs by interpreting policies and procedures to promote students’ achievement of their educational and career goals. The position functions as a para-professional to the program director in performing assigned duties related to the grant which do not require the professional competencies of certificated personnel.

The Educational Advisor is responsible for informing students of services and activities available to students interested in the AANAPISI grant program, communicating program eligibility requirements, and providing advice related to courses, other services, and student progress.

Essential Duties/Major Responsibilities:

• Checks and approves course selections by students which are best suited to their college majors as previously determined by their counselors.
• Provides guidance information related to College academic requirements, policies, and regulations.
• Provides information regarding State Colleges, Universities, and private institutions to students to apprise them of further educational opportunities.
• Assists students seeking or in need of academic and/or career counseling by referring them to the appropriate professional counselor; acts as a liaison between faculty, administration, and students.
• Assesses, researches, and resolves individual student academic concerns, including review and preliminary evaluation of student transcripts.
• Occasional travel with students for organized cultural fieldtrips and/or university tours.

Other Duties:

Knowledge Of:

-District policies and procedures
-California Education Code; Title V regulations
-Strong general knowledge of local community college and university curriculum and transfer issues, and policies and procedures
-Computer literacy; various software applications, e.g., Microsoft Word, WordPerfect

Ability To:

-Interviewing techniques; counseling techniques
-Strong problem solving skills
-Excellent interpersonal skills
-Excellent written and oral communication
-Management and organizational skills

Minimum Qualifications/ Education & Experience:

A.A. degree in Education or directly related field and 2-4 years directly related administrative experience is required; coursework in counseling is preferred. Alternatively, no direct experience is required with possession of a Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree
• Knowledge of educational interventions for a targeted subsection of the student population

License(s) & Other Requirements:
