The Division of University Advancement at Cal Poly Pomona invites applications for the position of Associate Vice President for University Relations (MPP Administrator III). Reporting directly to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Associate Vice President for University Relations develops implements, oversees, and manages existing and future Office of Public Affairs and Office of Events and Special Projects staff, operations, and new central services that support the information-sharing and constituent relations needs of Cal Poly Pomona. This includes implementing strategies relating to marketing; branding; media relations; social media; publications to include print, electronic and video; press releases; the central and program/event websites; and university-wide events ensuring the production of superior communications and a uniform message to support all initiatives and elevating the perception of the university to its multiple constituencies.
THE UNIVERSITY: California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), is one of two polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system, and one of only seven such institutions nationally. Located 30 miles east of Los Angeles, the university is in one of the most dynamic economic and cultural regions of the country. The University is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg, located within an hour's drive of beaches, mountains, and desert. The University’s 21,000 ethnically diverse students are enrolled in 60 baccalaureate and 26 master's degree programs with approximately 1,000 faculty. THE DIVISION: The Division of University Advancement is one of five divisions of the university whose prime purpose is to enhance the private support and awareness of the university. The Offices of University Relations, and Public Affairs, and Events and Special Projects have the responsibility of building awareness, and extending the knowledge about the university and its strengths to an ever-increasing number of stakeholder groups and target audiences, both on and off campus to include faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, prospects, and community members.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in marketing/communications or related field is required with a minimum of six (6) years in mid-to-higher level management experience in a public affairs advancement and/or marketing environment managing diverse personnel. Demonstrated success in leadership positions of progressive responsibility is required. Must have experience working with faculty, staff, students and/or alumni in a collaborative manner. Must have experience in marketing, including technology-based environments, and in leading overall brand development programs. Must demonstrate budgetary skills, strategic thinking, and ability to handle detailed, confidential matters discreetly and under pressure with short deadlines.
Must be able to travel overnight and to work evenings and weekends when needed to promote communication, fundraising and marketing objectives. Must have a valid driver’s license and insurance and the ability to drive personal automobile on a daily basis to off-campus meetings with prospects, CSU colleagues, and vendors.
PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Masters degree in public relations, marketing, or a related field is preferred. Additional experience in marketing or communications in higher education or corporate environments would be desirable.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Associate Vice President for University Relations oversees all staff, activities, and operations of the Public Affairs and the Events/Special Projects offices. In conjunction with the staff the AVP will:
• Ensure superior standards for university publications, marketing tools, and logos.
• Increase media coverage of university programming, achievements, and news.
• Direct and execute a comprehensive marketing program that is strategically aligned with the
mission and goals of the university and consistent university image.
• Develop and execute an annual brand business plan, including broad brand awareness and understanding of competitive trends, competitor marketing and competitor performance.
• Provide leadership in the direction and marketing of successful events in support of the university ensuring the highest level of professionalism.
• Serve as a member of the Senior Management team in the Division of University Advancement to develop strategic plans, goals, and fiscal management for the division.
APPOINTMENT DATE/SALARY: The university seeks to fill this position by the end of May 2013 or soon thereafter. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
