Assumes responsibility for ensuring the proper and effective supervision of public safety personnel including, but not limited to, assisting with the overall administration, planning and daily operations of the Public Safety Department as well as ensuring compliance with University policies and procedures as well as federal and state laws.
Directly supervises Sergeants and/or Officers In Charge (OIC) assigned to the shifts. Ensures issues that develop over the course of the shift are addressed. Responds to emergency as well as non-emergency incidents that occur, restoring order and providing sound resolutions as necessary and appropriate. *
Develops, conducts and maintains effective training programs for all members of the Public Safety Department and other members of the campus community as necessary and appropriate. Identifies specific in-service training needs and coordinates assignments of personnel to training appropriate training functions. *
Assumes responsibility for being on-call 24/7, responding to serious calls for service as required. *
Ensures University cooperation with all civil agencies. Establishes, cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with local law enforcement and other public service agencies as well as various members of the University community who have an impact on security and public safety operations.
Represents the department on committees as necessary and appropriate.
Conducts investigations of all citizen complaints and disciplinary complaints using knowledge of federal, state and local public safety regulations that apply to University operations. Forwards findings and recommendations for resolution to the Director or Associate Director.
Assists the Director and/or Associate Director with recruiting, staffing, scheduling and discipline procedures. Assists the Director and/or Associate Director with the scheduling and supervision of special events on campus.
Assures compliance with all departmental as well as University policies and procedures. Enforces University policies during alcohol related events and deters under age drinking. *
Develops and maintains a positive rapport with students, non-departmental staff, faculty and parents, interacting with them on a consistent and professional basis at all times. Assures maximum departmental efforts are made to enhance community relations as it pertains to campus activities.
Maintains statistical data as it pertains to the monitoring of potential criminal activity as well as those activities that have a potential negative impact on the quality of life to the campus community.
Coordinates weekly supervisory meetings to discuss departmental policies and procedures, facilitating input and recommendations from the Sergeants.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree preferred. The ability to achieve and maintain State MRT certification in addition to certification in PR24, OC Spray, handcuffing and other required training as deemed necessary by the department. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid state driver's license.
Three years of satisfactory or above work experience as a Public Safety Sergeant at the University of Hartford or four years of related experience in another similar agency or department.
