Position Function Research Associate I in the Geosystems Research Institute (GRI) within the HPC2 at Mississippi State University; This position will assist in an observation program focused on the use of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for geospatial data collection; Other personnel will assist with data collection and be responsible for data processing. Additional requirements for this position are detailed in FAA Notice N 8900.227 (or subsequent versions).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities * Operate multiple small unmanned aircraft: MSU/GRI currently owns or operates a Robota Triton, an AeroVironment Puma, and an Altavian Nova. Activities may include missions in collaboration with NOAA, DoD, and other entities for geospatial data collection.
*Maintain requisite recent flight experience (currency) requirements for specified UAVs
* Take leadership role in executing all aspects of flight missions
* Assist in developing mission plans
* Assist with analysis of alternatives, specification, and procurement of other unmanned aircraft systems as funding increases.
* Assist in resolving issues in data acquisition and processing
* Assist with aircraft/payload maintenance and repairs
* Assist in writing reports and publications
* Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in aeronautics or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications Possession of an FAA-issued commercial pilot certificate, higher certification, or an FAA-recognized equivalent is required; Ability to obtain and maintain a valid FAA second-class medical certificate issued under 14 CFR part 67 or the FAA-recognized equivalent is required; Ability to undergo flight reviews and maintain recent pilot experience in manned aircraft per 14 CFR part 61, as appropriate, or FAA-equivalent is required; Ability to participate in extended (e.g., 14 day) field missions, mostly in the southeast US is required. Experience with operating remotely-controlled small (less than 20 lb) aircraft; experience with operating small-to-medium UAVs.
