Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Associate II for the Pediatrics department within the Child Health Institute of New Jersey. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate II will conduct specialized research requiring complex mouse models, including specialized genotyping, breeding, handling and multiple experimental techniques, including cell signaling analysis, sophisticated microscopy and imaging techniques, and single cell analysis techniques including flow cytometry and cell sorting. The Research Associate II is expected to maintain a high level of research competency, knowledge and skills to perform duties assigned by the Principal Investigator.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Collects and analyzes cells from mice including from the bone marrow, lung and peritoneal cavity.
  • Carries out small animal surgery and xenograft (cancer models).
  • Independently carries out in vivo mouse experiments including infections with disease inducing agents.
  • Assists lab members with drug and cell injections into mice.
  • Plans and executes long-term experiments in mice, including the collection of blood from mice at various time points.
  • Keeps clear and detailed records of procedures and experiments in accordance with laboratory guidelines; maintains data in shared and readily accessible locations. May be required to compile data and present results.
  • Establishes performance standards, selects methodology and instrumentation necessary for cellular and molecular biology.
  • Assists in making sure a continuous program of research and development occurs in the laboratory. Evaluates existing procedures and proposes modifications or changes in order to keep the methodology and procedures current.
  • Responsible for the training and instruction of students, fellows, medical students, technicians, and other laboratory personal as required, as well as direct supervision of part-time undergraduate student employees.
  • Work collaboratively and independently with laboratories and researchers within CHI and Rutgers.
  • Attend and actively participate in both weekly and monthly group research meetings and discussions.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.  Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility .  Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine .  Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Doctoral Degree in Immunology or Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related field or a Master’s Degree in a relevant science.
  • Three (3) years of related research experience in Cancer, Immunology or Molecular & Cellular Biology.
  • Experience with, and working knowledge of genetically altered mouse models including specialized genotyping, breeding and handling, as well as experience in cell culture and the study of cell signaling and gene expression.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, as demonstrated by authorship of scientific publications (first authorship preferred), and ability to understand and communicate in English to sufficiently perform the job duties.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent organization skills with the ability to work collaboratively and independently.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in writing grants, fellowships, manuscripts, or scientific reports.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Must be able to work in a laboratory environment.
  • Must be able to perform laboratory research.
  • Some lifting may be required: such as office supplies, files or light boxes up to 25 pounds.
  • Walking, standing, sitting is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Must pass employee health clearance, TB Test and required safety training.
  • Must follow all safety precautions in laboratory, as required.
