Christopher Kandus named dean of students at Stetson University

Stetson University
August 14, 2010
Stetson University has selected Christopher Kandus as its new dean of students. Kandus will be coming to Stetson from Babson College in Massachusetts, where he is assistant dean in the Office of Campus Life.

Kandus will participate in FOCUS orientation for new Stetson students Aug. 14-17 and start in his new position permanently in early September. He succeeds Rina Tovar, who was promoted to vice president for Campus Life on July 1.

Kandus was selected in a national search. He has spent the past seven years at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., serving as assistant dean since 2007. Babson is a small, private business college with about 1,700 undergraduate students.

“I fell for Stetson University the moment I was able to talk with the staff, faculty and students, and I am honored to be joining the community at such an exciting time,” he said. “As dean of students, I look forward to working closely with the student body as we transform the student experience at Stetson University!”

Kandus will work closely with students and serve as one of the primary advocates for students and their families. Working with Tovar, he will oversee the Chaplain’s Office, Housing and Residential Life, Student Involvement, Health and Wellness Education, Fraternity and Sorority Involvement, Community Engagement, Campus Recreation, Career Services, Counseling, Student Health Services, and Judicial Affairs departments within the Campus Life Division. He will also lead Stetson’s Crisis Management Response Team, ensuring that the campus community has a strong support system in place to respond to student crises, and be a liaison between students and the university’s employees.

Prior to his employment at Babson, Kandus worked in various campus life roles at The University of Akron in Ohio. He is a member of the National Association for Student Activities, the National Association for Student Personnel Administrators, the Boston Area College Housing Association and the Association for College Unions International.

In 2008, Kandus was the recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award, for courage and conviction in valuing differences. He was a fellow in the Susan Vogt Fellowship Program and the recipient of the 4 C’s Award at Babson College in 2007. He was named New Professional of the Year by the Association of College Unions International in 2004.
