Central European University names Mel Horwitch business school dean

Central European University has named Mel Horwitch, currently Professor of Technology Management at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University, Dean of CEU Business School. A scholar who focuses on innovation and technology management, Professor Horwitch will assume his position on January 1, 2011.
In announcing the appointment, John Shattuck, President and Rector, CEU, emphasized Horwitch’s international and leadership experience, “I am delighted that Mel Horwitch has agreed to lead CEU Business School at this critical moment for both management education generally, and for CEU in particular. Having worked very closely with Mel, who has acted as a senior CEU advisor over the past year, I am confident that under his leadership CEU Business School will play a significant role in furthering CEU’s historic mission of building civil society around the globe. Mel brings to CEU extensive international experience and a rare blend of impressive intellectual, educational and leadership accomplishments.”
Referring to his appointment as Dean of CEU Business School, Horwitch stated, “I believe that effective managers in the 21st century require professionalism, a commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship and a desire and competency to adhere to the highest standards of ethics and integrity. CEU Business School aims to represent excellence in and to integrate all three key dimensions. Also, building on the overarching and inspiring mission of CEU as a whole, CEU Business School will expand to serve emerging economies throughout the world.”
Horwitch received an AB from Princeton University and an MBA and Doctorate from Harvard Business School. He served on the faculties of HBS, MIT’s Sloan School, Theseus Institute in Sophia Antipolis, France, and NYU-Poly and on the visiting faculties of London Business School and University of Paris-Dauphine. He was founding Dean of Management at Theseus Institute and was twice Chair of the Department of Technology Management at NYU-Poly, where he also is Director of the Institute for Technology & Enterprise. Professor Horwitch was also founding Director and Fellow of the Othmer Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies at NYU-Poly. He previously was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand.
