Chancellor of Georgia university system Erroll Davis to retire in 2011

Atlanta Business Chronicle

October 7, 2010

University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr. will retire at the end of his contract next summer, the chancellor announced Thursday.

Davis, who took over the system of 35 colleges and universities in 2006, cited the inauguration of a new governor in Georgia this winter as a reason for leaving. He also noted that his original commitment was to serve in the post for at least five years, an anniversary that falls in February.

“The university system chancellor needs to establish a long-term working relationship [with the governor] in order to be effective,” Davis said in a prepared statement. “It is therefore appropriate that I step down at the end of my contract year and allow my successor to establish this necessary relationship.”

Davis, a retired energy executive, is Georgia’s first university system chancellor with a business rather than academic career background.
