Judge Vaughn Walker to teach at Berkeley law school

The Law National Journal

November 11, 2010

U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, noted for striking down California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, will teach at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law following his retirement at year's end.

Walker, the chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, is scheduled to co-teach a course at Berkeley next semester on strategic decision-making in aggregate and complex litigation.

"To identify and address the strategic dilemmas that arise during complex litigation, the course will use a mix of lecture, discussion, and problem-solving methodologies," according to a law school announcement. "Students will be asked to focus on specific substantive and procedural aspects of recent pending litigation, and to assume roles in that litigation in order to apply decision-making tools in a realistic setting."

Walker will teach the course with Francis McGovern, a visiting professor from Duke Law School.
