University of North Texas regents on Friday approved the nomination of Lane Rawlins as the lone finalist for president, ending a search that began in April.
Rawlins, 72, was nominated by Lee Jackson, chancellor of the UNT system, after the interim president had initially expressed that he was not interested in pursuing the permanent position.
Jackson said he and Rawlins had “agreed that at some point this year we would talk about it.”
Rawlins has been the university’s interim president since May, after Gretchen Bataille’s resignation in February.
“It was not one of those thunderbolt things,” Rawlins said about his decision.
He said that once he got into the middle of what was going on at UNT, he realized he had a limited amount of time to start projects and there was a lot he wanted to do. Moving from an interim to a permanent position would be the way to accomplish that.
By law, the regents must wait 21 days before officially appointing Rawlins as president.
