University of Connecticut narrows presidential search to 10 candidates

Ten semi-finalists from more than 100 applicants are being interviewed next month in the search for the University of Connecticut's next president, officials say.
As Connecticut's flagship public university evaluates the top candidates, the school may face some competition of its own as nearby institutions, including the University of Massachusetts and Tufts University, search for new leaders.
A growing number of openings might complicate what experts say is already a difficult search. Efforts to fill the top spots are also under way at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, University of Maine, Suffolk University in Boston, and Connecticut's Sacred Heart University.
"It's very hard to hire talent these days in university administration. It's a pretty shallow pool of candidates," said Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, who specializes in education jobs at the executive search firm Korn/Ferry in Washington, D.C.
