Karl Krapek resigns as chair of Connecticut university system

The chairman of the Connecticut State University System Board of Directors tendered his resignation Wednesday, bringing to a total of six positions the new governor can fill on a board whose central office may be eliminated, or trimmed, as the state looks for efficiencies.
Karl J. Krapek, who has been on the board for 16 years and served as chairman since 2009, called an emergency meeting for Wednesday morning at which he announced his resignation. The meeting was conducted through a telephone conference.
Krapek’s letter does not refer to any of the controversies surrounding the CSU system, which was heavily criticized by then-Gov. M. Jodi Rell over raises approved for the central staff and outgoing Chancellor David G. Carter.
The board was further criticized by then-Attorney General Richard Blumenthal for delegating its responsibility to fire presidents in the four-university system to a subcommittee of the board. Several members of the board were not aware that Cheryl Norton, president of Southern Connecticut State University, had been removed.
