The Board of Trustees today authorized University of Delaware administrators to pursue plans to build what would be the state’s first public law school and enroll its first class as early as 2015.
The law school would be located on UD’s Newark campus and would enroll about 200 students in its first class. The university officials have not disclosed a potential location for any new buildings a law school would require.
If UD goes forward with the project, it would only be Delaware’s second law school. Widener University School of Law in Brandywine Hundred was accredited by the American Bar Association in 1975
The university touted Delaware’s role as a hub for corporate law as one of the key reasons for exploring the possibility of a law school. More than half of all Fortune 500 companies incorporate in Delaware, and the incorporations fees and taxes brought in $855 million for the state last fiscal year, according to the Delaware Department of State.
