The Metropolitan State College Board of Trustees this morning voted 5-2 to change the school's name to Denver State University.
If the General Assembly approves the name change, students could be attending DSU as soon as fall 2012.
Maria Garcia-Berry, who opposed the measure, said she is concerned the change could lead to a shift in the school's mission to provide a reasonably priced high-grade education.
"I want to be a superb institution, I don't want to be a mediocre university. The state of Colorado is littered with universities that shouldn't be labeled university," she said.
But board member Kathryn "Kat" Cammack, student Trustee, said students are overwhelmingly in favor of changing the name to Denver State.
