Cancer researchers from the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University soon will be working together at a new lab, backed by a $10 million gift from the foundation of retired ConAgra Foods chief executive Charles M. Harper and $10 million from the state.
The Harper Cancer Research Institute is on the campus of the Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend. Harper's gift was in memory of his late wife, Josie, who died of lung cancer in 1999.
"This building is really going to increase cancer research in this community. It's a paradigm shift for the region, the state and Notre Dame," said Dr. Rudolph Navari, assistant dean and director of the medical school. "It's shown that that kind of collaboration gets results quicker."
Navari is a practicing oncologist and will serve as clinical director at the institute.
