Union officials: Central Michigan University faculty union contract at risk of lapsing

At Central Michigan University, there have been no discussions about automatically extending the existing faculty union contract if negotiations continue beyond the June 30 expiration date, union officials said.
It's the first time there has been a real threat of a contract lapsing since at least 1989, faculty union President Timothy Connors told the Free Press.
If a contract extension isn't given, some faculty members may not see raises scheduled to start in the new fiscal year and may see an increase in benefits costs, Connors said.
It's being perceived by faculty as an unusually tough stance and is an indication of the financial pressure Michigan universities are feeling as they absorb a 15% cut in state aid next fiscal year, which takes effect next month.
