On Sept. 20, 2011, faculty members of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University will join with colleagues at the University of Ghana to launch a multiyear partnership that will enhance the expertise of medical students and professionals in the area of HIV/AIDS, which continues to plague much of Africa. The partnership is funded by a $1.1 million-grant from the United States Agency for International Development as part of the Higher Education for Development program.
The program, which also involves professors from Yale and Tufts universities, will serve students, residents, doctors, medical professors, researchers, and health workers, resulting in enhanced capacity for HIV/AIDS management in Ghana. During their visit, faculty from the United States and Ghana will co-teach a workshop for University of Ghana faculty on advances in HIV research and how to apply for grants. Other partnership activities will include academic curriculum development, continuing medical education, and distance education.
