Stanford University now has its first presence in New York City through a joint technology and entrepreneurship venture with City University of New York, Stanford President John Hennessy announced Tuesday.
The collaboration with CUNY's City College campus in northern Manhattan comes at the same time Stanford officials are working on a proposal for an independent applied science campus on Manhattan's Roosevelt Island. If New York City leaders accept Stanford's bid, the independent campus could open in late 2016.
Stanford@CCNY, as the collaboration will be known, will add a Silicon Valley flavor to City College's undergraduate engineering education. The students studying there will earn City College degrees, but Stanford engineering and entrepreneurship professors will advise them on taking their technology ventures to market, the way many Stanford students do every year.
Stanford will also renovate part of the City College campus for its use, and invite City College engineering students to the Bay Area to participate in summer business programs on the Stanford campus.
