Lynn University removed 26 Muscovy Ducks from its Boca Raton campus and later learned that most were killed, sparking outrage among some on campus.
The university posted an apology on its Facebook page Thursday night, saying it was the school’s understanding that the ducks would be relocated.
“However, we were recently informed that the majority were destroyed,” the Facebook posting says. “This was never our intention. We know several of our community members had grown fond of the ducks, we are truly sorry and saddened for any hurt this may have caused.”
Lynn officials say they removed the ducks after receiving complaints about unsanitary conditions they created around its lakeside patio. The ducks were also non-native and invasive, the message said.
“Invasive species of animals and plants are a huge problem in South Florida,” the university wrote.
