Southern Illinois University-Carbondale faculty association goes on strike

The Faculty Association at Southern Illinois University Carbondale went on strike Thursday after a tentative agreement could not be reached with the administration.
The other unions on campus affiliated with the Illinois Education Association — the Non-Tenure Track Faculty Association, Graduate Assistants United and the Association of Civil Service Employees — signed agreements early Thursday.
Despite signing their agreements, representatives of the three unions said they would continue to support the Faculty Association until that union reaches an agreement. Representatives said they would help picket when not working.
Kristi Brownfield, vice president of communications for Graduate Assistants United, said the faculty played an important role in helping her union fight for an agreement and the union would delay the ratification vote on the new contract until the Faculty Association had one.
