A tentative two-year contract agreement reached Tuesday morning between the faculty union and administration at Eastern Michigan University will give the faculty a 1% salary increase in the first year and a 2% increase the following year.
Faculty will pay more toward health insurance premiums. They will also receive a onetime $1,000 payment in January that is designed to offset the cost of those higher premiums.
Both sides were pleased with the agreement. Howard Bunsis, treasurer for the EMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors, said the negotiating team received a prolonged standing ovation from its membership during a meeting Tuesday afternoon.
"The faculty are very happy that we have a contract because the faculty wants to be in the classroom. That's where we want to be," Bunsis said.
